Thursday, May 4, 2006 Only Skin Deep Description: Physical beauty is superficial and is not as important as a person's intellectual, emotional, and spiritual qualities. New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition 2002 This common phrase downplays the importance of outward appearance and champions inward beauty. So does the Bible. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30 As a ring of gold in a swine's snout so is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. Proverbs 11:22 Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. 1 Peter 3:3-4 A faith that is only skin deep is also superficial and of little value. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." Matthew 23:27-28 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 You are looking at things as they are outwardly. If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ's, so also are we. 2 Corinthians 10:7 Christianity is not a garment one puts on, it is a way of righteousness one pursues with heart, soul and mind. But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed. Romans 6:17 |
