Thursday's Thought A Weekly Inspirational Message "Something to help you through the remainder of the week." |
Thursday, Month 00, 2006 More Words, Less Words A recent news item stated that more words are being added to the American dictionary. As time goes on new words are coined and become popular enough to become part of our national language. The addition of these words is a reflection of the cultural changes taking place in our society. Little noticed, but more important, are the words that fall into disuse because of the cultural changes. They may still be in the dictionary, but are rarely heard today. One in particular is: DISCREET--Marked by, exercising, or showing prudence and wise self-restraint in speech and behavior; circumspect. "We used to keep quiet about the things we were ashamed of. Now we seem to be ashamed of keeping quiet." [From an editorial in the local newspaper on the "tell-it-all" attitude of our society.] Discreet, and words like "modesty," "shame," and "disgraceful," need to become popular again to help bring back a sense of propriety. And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. Ephesians 5:11-12 |
