SIN

Literally: missing the mark

A Parallel

A crime, wherein a civil law is broken, is a violation of civil law. Others may be hurt by it, but primarily it is a violation of civil law and the violator of the law is subject to the punishment prescribed by law.

A transgression, wherein the law of God is broken, is a violation of God's law. Others may be victimized by such action, but the main point is that the violator of God's law will be subject to the punishment as determined by the law of God.

An Example

"And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'"

Luke 15:21

Here is a full recognition of the matter sin. "I have sinned against heaven." All sin is against God. But it can affects others, especially those closely associated.

A Lesson

When we sin we need to remember that we need to seek God's forgiveness through repentance and prayer as well to seek the forgiveness of those who were affected by our "missing the mark."
