‘I Deserve It’

Quite often we hear that one “deserves” this or that. Commercials are laced with the thought: “You deserve it.” “Get the [fill in the blank] you deserve”; “You deserve a break today,” etc.

Deserve means: to be worthy of, merit, earn. (Being alive is not a sufficient achievement to be deserving.)

When deprived of what is assumed to be deserved one feels he or she has been denied what is rightfully theirs: “It's not right!”

Who Deserves God’s Blessings?

No one! Blessings received are not the result of our goodness, but His. It’s God’s goodness that prompts Him to grant blessings. He has chosen to do it on the basis of one loving His Son and being a faithful disciple of the Lord.

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

A Word of Caution

Be careful of what you demand. Demands for what is “deserved” may be granted, much to your dismay. Don’t demand justice, ask for mercy.
