Excuse

An explanation offered to justify or obtain forgiveness.

"I should do it, but . . ."

"I knew it was wrong, but . . ."

"I shouldn't tell this, but . . ."

What follows the word "but" in each case is an excuse.

Something said to justify the action or inaction.

~~~~~~~
Excuses may explain, but they never justify.
How much better it would be if the word "but" was replaced by a period "."
"I should do it."
"I knew it was wrong."
"I shouldn't tell this."
~~~~~~~

Read in the Gospel of Luke 14:16-24 to find out what happens to those who make excuses. (To put it mildly, it isn’t pleasant.)
