OH MY EGO!

(A true story; name withheld to avoid embarrassment)

          A young man, new on the job, had impressed the boss with his abilities. He was thoroughly convinced that the others workers realized just how good he was. One day he saw several employees engaged in a conversation, and he knew they were talking about him. So he slipped behind some machinery where they couldn't see him, but he could hear them talking.

          Anticipating hearing about his great talent and abilities, he listened very carefully in order to savor the compliments. Oh, was he surprised to hear just how great they thought . . . their football team was. His ego was seriously deflated.

. . . I say to everyone among you not to think more highly

of himself than he ought to think . . .

Romans 12:3

“We wouldn't worry so much about what others think of us if we knew how seldom they do.”

What really matters is what the Lord thinks of us.

Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted;

but the one who examines me is the Lord.

1 Corinthians 4:1-4
